Power to the People: A Conversation with Archivist Robert P. J. Cooney, Jr.
In the second half of the twentieth century, the United States experienced many events that challenged diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, from the Civil Rights Movement to the Stonewall Uprising to Roe vs. Wade. The social and cultural environment was ripe for movement building, personal courage, radical activism, and self-determination.
During this period, Robert P. J. Cooney, Jr. (Bob Cooney) was an activist for nonviolence and women’s rights as well as a graphic designer, author, editor, and publisher. Cooney created the Pacific Coast Counterculture Collection to save materials about counterculture, social movements, and the alternative press—and his collection was the impetus for Gale’s Power to the People digital archive.
Join us for lunch and a conversation with Bob Cooney during the 2024 Charleston Conference. We’ll cover Bob’s life experiences, including his resistance to the draft and organizing against the Vietnam War, his advocacy for women’s rights, and his thoughts on social movements from the past and today.
